Stephen Randall: Paintings & Stories   A Plein Air Perspective

Stephen Randall: Paintings & Stories

A Plein Air Perspective

July 28th through September 17th  |  Opening Reception: Thursday, July 28th, 5 – 7 p.m.

Stephen is a South Dakota artist who typically paints rural and urban landscapes- on location outdoors in the open air or in his studio located downtown in Sioux Falls. A wide variety of regional landmarks are an inspiration for him to sketch, draw and paint as often as possible. His art is characterized by an impressionist style with broad brush strokes. Using plein air work for reference, larger paintings are produced in his studio using oil, acrylic, watercolor or pastel mediums.

“I enjoy the challenge of painting a landscape outdoors on location from start to finish. Weather conditions, time of day, atmosphere, and emotional experience have immediate freedom of expression. I hope my paintings convey this to people who perhaps have had a similar experience with that location or subject.

One of the paintings in my show, Last Light on Lake Okoboji, is a significant piece for me as it recalls my family’s visit to the lake toward evening, with storm clouds building at the horizon but not yet heard, water lapping at the docks and along the rocky shore. A good memory.”

Randall would like visitors to his exhibit to take away, if possible, a memory of personal experience evoked by his plein air paintings.
