June 13 & 14: Artistic Sculptures Inspired by Steve Bormes

Students will create a metal/plastic sculpture using found objects. Class will begin in the Monte Pearson Gallery to view artist, Steve Bormes’ sculptures and then move down to the Youth Studio. The instructor will demonstrate techniques students can use to create found object materials, connect items, and will assist as students create and hot gluing their pieces together as they create a 3-D hanging sculpture. A corded plug in light kit will be included with each sculpture to create a beautiful glow from the inside of the artwork! Sculptures will be ready to take home at the end of class.

June 20 & 21: Designing with Scratchboard

Students will use a variety of line work to create a drawing in reverse with Scratch-Art Scratchboard. Use a scratch knife, brush, and other drawing tools as well as instructor techniques to produce sophisticated textures and effects on pre-inked, china clay coated scratchboard.  Students will also learn how to create their own scratch art paper in this two-day workshop!

June 27 & 28: Animals in Clay

Students will enjoy sculpting with clay in this two-day workshop creating an animal in clay! Instructor will guide participants through the clay sculpting process including slab rolling, coiling, “score and slip” clay attachments, and designing their clay animal with carving tools. Participants will use forms to support their clay animal while sculpting and on the second day after construction of animal is complete students will use Underglaze paint to color their animal sculptures! Clay pieces will stay at the PLAC for the drying and firing process and participants will be called to pick up their pieces approx. 2 weeks after class.

July 11 & 12: Decorative Clay Cups

Create a hand built clay cup in this two-day workshop that you can use, gift, or decorate with after completion! You will learn to use the slab roller, “score and slip” method to attach clay, and coiling to build your clay cup. After the cup is constructed students will apply an underglaze coating to the entire cup and then hand etch onto the glazing to create imagery or design!  Clay pieces will stay at the PLAC for the drying and firing process and participants will be called to pick up their pieces approx. 2 weeks after class.

July 18 & 19: Seurat’s Drawn to Photography

Summer Seurat’s will use a mix of handmade art and technology to create visual compositions and photograph with IPads!  Students will learn what a composition is and start by creating a drawing of their choosing on paper, then be invited to select plants from our outdoor garden to pick and lay on their drawing in a fun and unusual arrangement. Once kiddos place their natural elements they will each get their turn taking photographs of their compositions with an IPad to create artistic photographs! Students will view the PLAC exhibit, Spoonfuls of Inspiration, by artist Brent Herrig for inspiration for the project. The images will then be uploaded to Pixieset after the class by instructor for a digital album that is available for download by the student or family after the class. A link will be given or sent to each participant’s parent with a link to the digital album. Please allow 48 hours after the class ends for the link to be sent, students will be able to take home their drawn images for framing after class ends.

August 1 & 2: Gelli Plate Monoprints

Seurat’s will explore the methods of mono-prints, a type of printmaking process, and also collage and layering mono-prints in this two-day workshop. A large scale print will be created by using Gelli Plates and plexi-glass to make one time printed images, ink, and print them on paper. Students will get the chance to create their own unique stencils, cut, and collage all prints made onto one large 11 x 14 poster size paper that will be ready to take home for framing at the end this two-day workshop!

August 8 & 9: Painting Outdoors on Printed Papers

Students will collage a background on canvas from painted, drawn, scrapbook, and recycled papers to use for their Plein Air landscape paintings. After student’s collage backgrounds, the instructor will demonstrate the plein air painting process (painting out in the open- outside!) and students will then bring their canvas, easel, and paints outdoors (or view out a window weather pending!) to paint over the collaged layers to create a beautiful multi-layered landscape artwork!
