Summer 2023 Youth Education Classes

Preschool Picassos| Ages 3-5 yrs.  | Wednesdays, 10am-11am |Fee: $10 |$12

June 7: Watercolor Bubbles | On watercolor paper, students will learn how to stamp watercolor circles to create overlapping and paint “wet on wet” style to create a colorful bubble work of art!

June 14: Fairy/Gnome Clay Door | Students will learn to create textures, attach clay with “slip and score”, and underglaze paint to create the cutest little fairytale doors to place inside or outside of your home. Pieces will be left to dry/fire in the kiln and will be ready to pick up approximately 2 weeks after class. Please note that pieces must be picked up within two months, no shipping is available.

June 21: Rollercoaster Painting | Inspired by the local amusement park, students focus on the element of line to create a rollercoaster using paint dipped string and printed cardboard on colorful paper.

June 28: Fabric Mosaics | Students will view works by exhibiting artist, Georgia Rowswell in the galleries and in the studio use various fabrics to glue and arrange a textile collage wall hanging.

July 12: Clay Texture Turtles | Students will use texture boards on clay to add design and dimension to shapes that will then be slip and scored together to create the cutest turtles!

July 19: Wood Block Printmaking | Using wood blocks and foam shapes, youngsters will learn how to make multiple prints using bright bold colors contrasted by black shapes.

July 26:  Painted paper Bouquet Collage | Trace, cut, and glue the sweetest bouquet of flowers with pre-painted papers.

August 2: Floating Chalk Impressionism | Using chalk in an unusual way, students will dip paper in a tub of floating chalk, creating a beautifully colored paper. Then taking inspiration from artist Claude Monet, students will add their own landscape elements.

Summer Cezannes | Grades 1-3 | Monday & Tuesdays, 10am-11:30am | Fee: $20 | $24  |  Two Session Class

June 5 & 6: Metallic Watercolor Insects | Flutter into watercolor painting in this two-day workshop! Students will learn techniques in watercolors that will be applied to drawn insects such as bees, butterflies, dragonflies, and more. Metallic paint will be added with tiny brushes to create the details of these flying creatures!

June 12 & 13: Clay Forest Dwelling | In this hand-building clay project, students will create dwellings for forest animals using clay slabs. They will use press molds and other texture tools to embellish their structures to look like trees, leaves, and burrows. Pieces will be glazed,  dried, fired, and ready to pick up approximately two weeks after the workshop. Please note that pieces must be picked up within two months, no shipping is available.

June 19 & 20: Birds Eye View Painting | Imagine a landscape from the view of a bird... or a drone! Students will view photography by Tom Gustafson in the gallery and use his work as inspiration to sketch and paint in acrylics their very own land or cityscape.

June 26 & 27: Fabric Collage | Using felt and other various fabrics, students will cut, glue, and arrange a textile collage wall hanging.

July 10 & 11: Handbuilt Vases | Using the slab and coil clay techniques, students will create a vase in this two-day workshop. Pieces will be glazed,  dried, fired, and ready to pick up approximately two weeks after the workshop. Please note that pieces must be picked up within two months, no shipping is available.

July 17 & 18: No class this week

July 24 & 25: Painted Paper Story Art | Working with colored card stock, painted papers, scissors, and rubber cement students will explore storytelling with collaged paper.

July 31 & August 1: Art Outside | Take your art-making skills outside as we explore the grounds of the PLAC and sketch and paint Plein Air, a French term meaning out in the open. Students will use chalk pastels on colored paper and even experiment with 3D sidewalk art. Although shade and water will be provided, a hat is suggested as well as sunscreen. In case of inclement weather, the class will be located inside looking out large windows.

June 8 & 9: Watercolor Superheroes | Create an action portrait of your favorite superhero in this two-day class. The instructor will lead students through drawing figures and applying watercolor paint along with a little splatter!

June 15 & 16: Aquatic Clay Sculptures | Hand build an underwater landscape of coral and other aquatic life out of clay. Learn how to slip and score and hollow out to create a sturdy clay sculpture and complete by applying underglaze paint. Pieces will be left to dry, fired, and ready to pick up approximately two weeks after the workshop. Please note that pieces must be picked up within two months, no shipping is available.

June 22 & 23: Aerial Paintings | Imagine a landscape from the view of a bird... or a drone! Students will view photography by Tom Gustafson in the gallery and use his work as inspiration to sketch and paint in acrylics their very own land or cityscape.

June 29 & 30: Recycled Fabric Paintings | Students will view works by exhibiting artist, Georgia Rowswell in the galleries and in the studio use various fabrics to glue and arrange a textile collage wall hanging.

*July 13 & 14: Pottery Wheel Creations | 10 am-12 pm | Fee: $30 | $34 | Learn the stages of pottery! Create 1-2 pieces and apply underglaze paint while still on the wheel. Pieces will be dried, fired, clear glazed, and ready to pick up two weeks after the workshop. Limited to 8 students. Please note that pieces must be picked up within two months, no shipping is available.

July 20 & 21: Magazine Monoprinting | Seurat’s will explore the methods of mono-prints, a type of printmaking process, and also collage and layering mono-prints in this two-day workshop. A large-scale print will be created by using Gelli Plates and plexiglass to make one-time printed images, and ink, and print them on paper. Students will get the chance to create their own unique stencils, cut, and collage all prints made onto one large 11 x 14 paper.

July 27 & 28: Collage Illustration | Working with colored card stock, painted papers, Exacto knife, and rubber cement students will explore storytelling with collaged paper.   

Teen Art | 7th-12th | Monday & Tuesdays, 1:30-3:30 pm | Fee: $22 |$26, *Unless otherwise listed | Two Session Class

June 5 & 6: Watercolor Portraits | In this two-day workshop, teens will be guided through the portrait painting process of sketching facial features and applying watercolor to create a dynamic portrait. Students may bring a photo of one person (digital or printed) to class to recreate, although not required.

June 12 & 13: Coral Reef Clay Sculptures | Students will learn and use hand-building skills to create a coral reef full of interesting textures and shapes! Pieces will be dried, fired, clear glazed, and ready to pick up approximately two weeks after the workshop. Please note that pieces must be picked up within two months, no shipping is available.

June 19 & 20: Drone’s Eye View Painting | Imagine a landscape from the view of a bird... or a drone! Students will view photography by Tom Gustafson in the gallery and use his work as inspiration to sketch and paint in acrylics their very own land or cityscape.

June 26 & 27: Painterly Textile Collage | Students will view works by exhibiting artist, Georgia Rowswell in the galleries and in the studio and use various fabrics to glue and arrange a textile collage wall hanging.

*July 10 & 11: Pottery Wheel 101 | 1:30 pm-3:30 pm | Fee: $30 | $34 | Learn the stages of pottery! Create 1-2 pieces and apply underglaze paint while still on the wheel. Pieces will be dried, fired, clear glazed, and ready to pick up two weeks after the workshop. Limited to 8 students. Please note that pieces must be picked up within two months, no shipping is available.

July 17 & 18: Exploring Mono-print Printmaking | Teens will explore the methods of mono-prints, a type of printmaking process, and also collage and layering mono-prints in this two-day workshop. A large-scale print will be created by using Gelli Plates and plexiglass to make one-time printed images, ink, and print them on paper. Students will get the chance to create their own unique stencils, cut, and collage all prints made onto one large 11 x 14 poster-size paper that will be ready to take home for framing at the end of this two-day workshop!

July 24 & 25: Papercut Illustration | Working with colored card stock, painted papers, Exacto knife, and rubber cement students will explore storytelling with collaged paper.

July 31 & August 1: Plein Air Pastels | Take your art making skills outside as we explore the grounds of the PLAC and sketch and paint Plein Air, a French term meaning out in the open. Students will use chalk pastels colored paper and inside, we will experiment with pan pastels. Although shade and water will be provided, a hat is suggested as well as sunscreen. In case of inclement weather, the class will be located inside looking out large windows.

Participants must register by the Wednesday one week prior to the class, no exceptions.  Registration is based on what grade your child is going into in the 23-24 school year.
