Struggling writer Paul Varjak moves into a New York apartment building and becomes intrigued by his pretty, quirky neighbor Holly Golightly. Holly’s lifestyle confuses and fascinates Paul; in public she flits through parties with a sexy, sophisticated air, but when they’re alone she changes into a sweetly vulnerable bundle of neuroses.

 

June 12:

Red Firecracker, Green Firecracker (China) (1995) (R)

Starring: Jing Ning & Xiaorui Zhao

A woman inherits her father’s fireworks factory, as he had no son. The business does well and everything works in an orderly fashion until one day, an itinerant painter is hired to decorate the doors and vases at the factory. The woman, forbidden to marry and thereby involve outsiders in the factory ownership, finds herself drawn to the headstrong painter. When they fall in love, the situation throws her entire life into disarray.

 

June 19: The Rules of the Game (France) (1939) (Approved)

Starring: Julien Carette & Tony Corteggiani

Jean Renoir’s 1939 classic is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. Cloaked in a comedy of manners, this scathing critique of corrupt French society is about a weekend hunting party at which amorous escapades abound among the aristocratic guests-which are also mirrored by the activities of the servants downstairs. The refusal of one of the guests to play by society’s rules sets off a chain of events that ends in tragedy.

 

June 26: The House of Sand and Fog (2003) (R)

Starring: Jennifer Connelly & Ben Kingsley

Massoud Amir Behrani, an Iranian immigrant, has spent most of his savings trying to enhance his daughter’s chances of a good marriage. Once she is married, he spends the remaining funds on a house at an auction, unwittingly putting himself and his family in the middle of a legal tussle with the house’s former owner. What begins as a legal struggle turns into a personal confrontation, with tragic results.
