Coilbuilding, Wheel Work and More

This hands-on workshop will focus on techniques useful for teachers as well students and potters. The knowledge gained will allow the participants to create masterful works with a minimum of practice or experience. Demonstrated topics will include the overlap-and-smear coil-building technique, moving large (5ftx3ft) slabs without the use of boards, ultra thin cylinders using slabs, constructing large globes with slabs, tricks for foolproof lids, upside-down plates, and more. Participants will construct symmetrical as well as nonsymmetrical vessels and sculptures as appropriate to individual needs. A number of decorating techniques will be demonstrated, as necessary, for the work produced.
Participants should be familiar with basic clay working and technology. At least one year clay experience is highly recommended.

Why is Modern Art So Hard to Understand?

Have you ever looked at a modern painting and thought “My Kindergartener can do this!”. Then this workshop is for you! Katie will use the books Why a Painting Is Like a Pizza: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Modern Art and How to Read a Modern Painting: Lessons from the Modern Masters to help you appreciate and understand modern art. We will look at and discuss images from many different modern artists and many different modern art styles.

This is a chance to use PLAC studios to create your own artwork! Bring your own materials, and work on your own projects. This is not a class, but rather an opportunity to expand your own working techniques. Materials for still-lifes will be available for painting and drawing.
Summer Artist Lecture Series
The Lectures will be held in the Lauridsen Performing Arts Theatre from 6-7pm one Thursday night each month during the summer. The artists will show slides or digital images and talk about themselves, their work, and their processes.

If you liked the books The DaVinci Code and Girl with a Pearl Earring, this reading group is for you. We will be reading fictional books that involve art history. The group will read one book each month and meet at the end of the month for discussion.
