Wei Tai
A native of China, Wei Tai was born in 1944 in a rural village south of Shanghai. His father was a well-known sculptor who encouraged his son to study art at an early age. Tai attended the Shanghai Institute where he received formal traditional Chinese painting methods as well as Western artistic techniques and methods of fashion design and textiles. Eventually, Tai was appointed as Assistant Professor of Art and Fashion Design at the Institute. Following the change of climate in China with the Open Door Policy toward the West in the early 1980's, Tai served seven years as Chief Designer for the China Silk Corporation, as fashion and the arts became increasingly popular. Tai later traveled extensively in China in order to study class ical artistic methods and color combinations. "I wanted to combine Chinese ancient art and techniques to create my own style in my paintings and my fashions," said the artist. On his journeys, he observed art and was able to see the change in color that occurred when artifacts were unearthed. In his famous Xian Unearthed series he attempted to capture the original colors of ancient artwork before exposure to oxygen faded the intensity. Wei Tai sells and shows his work internationally.
