What If & Why Not?
While artists are creating their artwork, they often pause to look at their work and ask themselves, “What if?” or “Why not?” What if the sky was painted yellow? Why not paint the face blue? In this exhibit, you can be the artist. You have the opportunity to change one of the painting from the PLAC collection and make it your own creation. You can do this by asking yourself “What if?” and “Why not?” For example: “What if lakes were made of pudding?” or “Why aren't trees made of cotton balls?”
What if and Why Not? Hands-on Station
The painting that is included in the “What if and Why Not?” exhibit is a landscape painting. A landscape painting is an image of something in nature and can include trees, water, grass, animals, etc. You can create your own landscape by using our texture rubbing plates. Texture is how something feels or how it looks like it would feel.
Draw a landscape on your paper. Then, lay the paper on top of a texture plate and rub a crayon over it. You can make your tree look like it has bark on it, make rain drops in the sky or put animal tracks on the ground. Be creative and explore the world of landscapes and texture.
Landscape Magnet Board
In the “What if and Why Not?” exhibit, you can change the landscape and see what happens. In the Landscape Magnet Board, add objects to the landscape and create your own unique image. Some of the magnets are simple geometric shapes such as squares, triangles, and rectangles.
Try putting the shapes next to each other and making objects that you would see outside. For example, a square and a triangle could make a house with a roof. Some of the magnets are pieces of artwork at the Pearson Lakes Art Center. Try putting the artwork in your landscape and see the difference it makes.
